2025 Executive Elections

NSWMSC performs a multitude of functions key to the daily lives of medical students, thus requiring motivated, skilled and dedicated individuals to direct its course. All positions on the NSWMSC are open for election for the 2025 term:  

  • President  
  • Vice President Internal 
  • Vice President External 
  • Secretary  
  • Treasurer  
  • Sponsorship Officer  
  • Events Directors (2 positions available, option to apply as a paired team or individually)
  • Publications Officer
  • IT Officer
  • Academic Officer  
  • International Students’ Representative (2 positions available, option to apply as a paired team or individually) 
  • Indigenous Students’ Representative    

Each position has a specific application process and will be outlined in the respective sections below. However, common to all applications are the following: 

  1. Personal statement (200 words) – must contain a description of interest and motivation 
  2. Relevant curriculum vitae (CV):
    1. 2 pages maximum, 12pt font
    2. Prior experience and other factors influencing eligibility should be highlighted
  3. Filling out the relevant online form with contact and other details 

If for any reason the personal statement and CV cannot be attached to the Google Form then please email it (along with the name and position being applied for) to Natalie Silberberg, at secretary@nswmsc.org.au by (date will be confirmed). If there are multiple applications being submitted, then each position and its relevant documents must be sent in a separate email.  

Applicants for particular roles (President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer) are required to be available on October (exact date will be confirmed) via Zoom for a speech and/or interview. While it is strongly encouraged to attend, if you are unable to, please notify us and we will try our best to accommodate you. Other positions are only required to submit a written response as well as the other components outlined in the relevant section below. After applying, you should receive a confirmation email from secretary@nswmsc.org.au before the end of (date will be confirmed).  Each university (as part of the NSWMSC Council) will have a single vote per Executive position. In the case of a tie, the current Executive will place a deciding vote.

2025 POSITION DESCRIPTIONS

Required Components

  • CV (2 pages maximum, 12pt font)
  • Personal statement (200 words)

  • Interview (live at Council Meeting 3 on the date will be confirmed)

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Determines the direction and progress of the organisation throughout the year and in subsequent years
  • Act as a chair to all NSWMSC council meetings and executive meetings
  • Liaise with the NSWMSC Council and inform them of developments, changes or news relating to NSWMSC
  • Maintain and update the NSWMSC Constitution
  • Coordinate the internship support forum with Vice President External, Secretary and IT Officer
  • Present NSWMSC reports at official meetings throughout the year, including all 3 AMSA National Councils and all 3 NSWMSC councils
  • Liaise regularly with the Vice President Internal, Vice President External, Treasurer, and Secretary
  • Act as a spokesperson for the organisation, representing the views of all medical students in NSW and the ACT on issues relevant to medical students
  • Officially represent the Council at relevant forums, meetings and conferences throughout the year and proactively engage with relevant NSW health bodies (e.g. NSW Health, HETI, Medical School Deans) to pursue the interests of NSW medical students on a state-wide basis
  • Proactively seek new ways to have the voice of NSWMSC heard throughout the state, via reaching out to new organisations and the media
  • Coordinate advocacy on behalf of the Council and its constituent medical societies
  • Attend AMA (NSW) meetings when possible, and relay information back to the Committee
  • Act as the Public Officer of the organisation for governance purposes
  • Oversee coordination with other medical student bodies
  • Retain a position as the AMA (NSW) Student Councillor
  • Review MoUs with external organisations at least every three years

  • Must have attended a NSWMSC Council in any capacity throughout the duration thus far of their medical degree – including but not limited to NSWMSC Rep, MedSoc President, proxy role, NSWMSC executive

Roles and Responsibilities 

  • Oversee and facilitate the wellbeing of all NSWMSC executive members 
  • Review NSWMSC’s internal policies each year 
  • Proactively create new policies pertaining to internal matters, including but not limited to: Volunteer Welfare, Risk Minimisation and Organisational Management 
  • Oversee the Events Directors, IT Officer and Publications and Promotions Officer portfolios 
  • Assist the President in matters of governance and management 
  • Act as an impartial third party to moderate grievances within the executive 
  • Coordinate with NSW Medical Schools to promote intervarsity resource sharing and communication

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the President in drafting and distributing NSWMSC media releases, briefers, committees, meetings
  • Coordinate NSWMSC’s advocacy efforts in conjunction with the President
  • Access to all social media in coordination with the Publications Officer
  • Oversee Indigenous Officer and International Officer portfolios
  • Act as the NSW Representative in AMSA meetings, and attend AMSA Council to assist the President in presenting the NSW report where necessary
  • Administer Advocacy surveys
  • Draft submissions or statements on relevant law reform when required
  • Attend meetings and events with the President when required
  • Assist the President in managing the Internship Applicant Support Page and answering any internship-related queries

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Organise regular Executive meetings both in-person and via videoconference (fortnightly) 
  • Organise logistics and minute NSWMSC Council Meetings, including content and discussion 
  • Arrange elections of incoming Executive and other positions throughout the year 
  • Ensure correspondence with Medical Student Council Representatives from each of the NSW universities via email or Facebook 
  • Minute all meetings of the organisation
  • Support the operation of the NSWMSC Microsoft Teams space with the IT Officer
  • Coordinate the distribution of incoming correspondence to relevant members of the executive 
  • Provide general logistic and organisational support to other aspects of the Council, including events, retreats, and advocacy efforts where needed

Roles and Responsibilities 

  • Keep financial records of all transactions made by NSWMSC  
  • Issue invoices for all revenue raised
  • Ensure insurance of NSWMSC is up to date  
  • Work together with IT Officer to ensure that ticket sales run smoothly  
  • Ensure that all refund transactions are done in due time  
  • Create a budget at the start of the year to forecast revenue spent/made  
  • Work to set target revenue with Sponsorship Officer
  • Submit a financial report according to Fair Trading NSW  
  • Coordinate prompt refunds for any spending on Council Meetings, events or other such allocated expenditures  
  • Manage merchandise, including spending and inventory

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop and distribute the NSWMSC Sponsorship Prospectus 
  • Proactively engage with sponsors. 
  • Establish relationships with new sponsors while maintaining relationships with existing sponsors 
  • Work with the NSWMSC executive to develop/improve partnership opportunities for sponsors 
  • Work together with the NSWMSC Executive to collaboratively organise, promote and run NSWMSC initiatives 
  • Organise sponsored social media posts with Publications Officer, or Events Officers if relevant

My job is mainly communicating with organisations to secure deals and funding for both academic and social events. I write lots of emails, attend meetings with our our partners and the MSC team to continue bringing quality events like our annual cruise and SydCon. “Events Director is a really fun and rewarding role! You are responsible for organising various events for medical students across NSW which involves liaising with venues and promoting events to different medical societies. There’s a lot of freedom and flexibility in the role & what events you would like to plan. Roles and Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for various NSWMSC publications and promotions, in an editorial and design role
  • Liaise with the NSWMSC executive, medical societies, and students across NSW and the ACT to produce engaging content
  • Lead NSWMSC’s social media presence with the support of the NSWMSC executive
  • Produce, alongside Sponsorship Officer official documents including the sponsorship prospectus
  • Work with Events Directors to develop promotional material for events throughout the year
  • Attend regular executive and council meetings 

Desirable Attributes

“Being publications officer for NSWMSC was very enjoyable throughout 2023. This role mainly consists of making graphics for other MSC positions and organising social media posts. It can get a little stressful if you have multiple things to do at once, however, I found scheduling Facebook posts ahead of time and multitasking whilst making graphics lifted some of the pressure. Roles and responsibilities

  • Maintain and oversee the NSWMSC website, Internship Applicant Support Page, domain name and hosting accounts
  • Create and manage the NSWMSC Microsoft Teams Server
  • Throughout the year, continually update, improve and extend the NSWMSC website 
  • Oversee email address creation and management for NSWMSC Executive
  • Liaise with the President and Secretary to ensure content posted online such as AMSA reports and policy updates are relevant and current 
  • Liaise with the Secretary to ensure that Council meeting minutes are obtained for inclusion on the website 
  • Liaise with the Sponsorship Officer to ensure that sponsors’ logos, links and descriptions are updated on the website 
  • Liaise with Publications Officer to ensure all publications are promptly shared onto the website

  • Foster community engagement among international students in NSW 
  • Respond to enquiries and concerns of international medical students in NSW

“I really enjoyed my time as NSWMSC Academic Director – it opened a ton of opportunities in the research and advocacy space. Roles and Responsibilities

  • Representing the interests of Indigenous Medical students in New South Wales 
  • Advocating for Indigenous Medical students in New South Wales including, but not limited to: “Closing the Gap”, inclusion of Indigenous Health issues into NSW medical school curricula and increased cultural competency of NSW medical schools
  • Liaising with AIDA (Australian Indigenous Doctors Association) SRC members in NSW 
  • Contributing to advocacy efforts of NSWMSC regarding Indigenous issues with consultation of wider Indigenous community, AIDA and their members 
  • Implementation of relevant and Indigenous focused events e.g., NAIDOC Week 
  • Organise a welcome to country for major NSWMSC events  

Desirable Attributes

  • Knowledgeable in issues regarding Indigenous medical students in Australia
